The Cheshire side took their chances with two opportunist strikes either side of half-time, while the Blackpool strikers continually fluffed their lines in front of goal.

Blackpool might have taken the lead in the 13th minute but a Ben Burgess strike at the near post was disallowed for offside.

Then in the 19th minute, centre-back Ian Evatt ghosted into the six-yard box only to see a firm header crash off the underside of the bar.

Macclesfield made them pay for their profligacy when youngster Shaun Brisley was first to a loose ball in the box and poked the ball goalbound through the legs of stranded keeper Matt Gilks.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher then squandered a gilt-edged chance for the Tangerines as he powered a free header over the bar from close range.

The turning point in the game came in the 57th minute when fellow captains Terry Dunfield and Keith Southern were both dismissed for an immature bout of fisticuffs under the referee's nose.

Macclesfield were first to regroup and, when Blackpool failed to clear a Jamie Tolley free-kick, veteran Martin Gritton stabbed home a free header from four yards.

Macclesfield were composed in the last half hour and nearly added another goal on 80 minutes when Tolley sent a shot skimming past the far post from 15 yards.

They might have had another goal deep in injury time when sub Francis Green used his pace to escape down the left flank before forcing a stunning one-handed save from keeper Gilks.
