Gutsy second-string denied at Villa

An end-to-end encounter at Villa Park was decided by a James Collins header two minutes from time.

Aston Villa took the lead in the 28th minute through Stewart Downing. Ashley Young's through ball was too good for the Blackpool defence and Downing twisted and turned on the edge of the D before managing to get his shot away. The ball deflected off Dekel Keinan and into the top of the net, leaving goalkeeper Richard Kingson helpless.

Blackpool secured a sucker punch on the stroke of half-time through the industrious Marlon Harewood. A delicious back heel from Matt Phillips - who was the visitors' man of the match - set the striker up, who took his time before powering the ball beyond Brad Friedel.

Villa restored their lead on the hour through Nathan Delfouneso. Young carved through the Blackpool defence before crossing for the striker, who made no mistake from a handful of yards.

Villa were in the ascendancy from this point and deserved to score a third but it was Blackpool who claimed the next goal and it was substitute DJ Campbell who scored it. He darted through some lacklustre Villa challenges before taking a shot which deflected off Collins and looped over Friedel.

However, Villa had a sting in the tail as Collins made amends for his intervention in Blackpool's goal to power a Downing cross home with a thumping header to give Villa a 3-2 victory.
