Former England defender Armfield, now a radio pundit for the BBC, was honoured for his community work in Lancashire.

Armfield, who made a full recovery from cancer in 2007, said: "It has come as a surprise to me and I'm very grateful for the award, although it is something I get a great deal of enjoyment from."

The 74-year-old, capped 43 times for his country including being made captain for the 1962 World Cup Finals, made a record 627 appearances for Blackpool and is set to be recognised further with a statue outside Bloomfield Road.
