Holloway heaps praise on hero Gilks

Gilks palmed away Scott McDonald's spot-kick eight minutes from the end of Tuesday night's Championship clash at Bloomfield Road before the Seasiders doubled the lead given to them in the first half by Brett Ormerod, thanks to DJ Campbell's tap-in.

"It was a fantastic save," said Holloway. "That secured the victory for us.

"I said all along that I've got two fantastic 'keepers here with totally different personalities.

"There's a calm one, Paul Rachubka, and the excitable one who staked his claim with a great save tonight.

"I didn't feel it was a penalty, I felt it was given as compensation for not sending Charlie Adam off earlier."

Holloway was referring to Adam's foul a minute after half-time which denied Jeremie Aliadiere a clear run at goal.

Adam received only a booking, infuriating the visiting fans and players, and just 15 minutes later Blackpool's Rob Edwards was given his marching orders for bringing down McDonald in a similar situation.

Boro boss Gordon Strachan said: "From Blackpool's point of view those were two great professional fouls because if they hadn't taken our players down we would have been leading the game.

"The game was really all about the first half when Blackpool showed good professionalism and played the conditions well while we were stuck between trying to do that and playing football.

"It wasn't very good to watch but they were effective."

Blackpool had enjoyed the better of the early play with Ormerod, Campbell and the influential Adam all going close in the 10 minutes before the deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher, Middlesbrough's main tormentor when Blackpool won 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium earlier in the season, looked to have been fouled on the edge of the area but played a clever reverse pass into the box which Ormerod slipped past goalkeeper Danny Coyne from close range.

Coyne twice had to be alert in the closing minutes of the half to turn away Ian Evatt's snap-shot and block a close-range effort from Taylor-Fletcher.

Middlesbrough changed things around at the break, bringing on the experienced Julio Arca for young winger Jonathan Franks.

Striker Lee Miller was also thrown on after Edwards was dismissed, in a bid to pep up a disappointing attack, but there was no way through the Blackpool defence.

Hameur Bouazza came on for the last 10 minutes for Blackpool in his first action since returning from the African Nations Cup, and the Algerian exchanged passes with fellow substitute Stephen Dobbie four minutes into injury-time before placing the ball past Coyne for Campbell to tap home from close range.
