Monday 4 January 1892
Blackpool entertained the Canadian national side at Raikes Hall, but “the Canadians failed to catch on in Blackpool and Monday’s match must have resulted in a loss to the Blackpool club. It has been much the same throughout the tour of the Canadians and there is more than one club lamenting that they took them on. Still the team contains, and did contain, some good players who are worth their salt.” Those players did not perform to their potential as Canada were beaten 3-1 by goals from ‘Gyp’ Cookson, Harry Tyrer and Jimmy Atkinson.
Saturday 4th January 2003
Phil Barnes saved a Crystal Palace 64th-minute penalty only for Tommy Black to score on the rebound was enough to end the Seasiders cup dream in this the 50th anniversary year since the 1953 success. The Seasiders in front of 9,062 went ahead early on courtesy of an own goal after just nine minutes by Tony Popovic who directed the ball into his own net as he tried to clear a Richie Wellens corner. With Chris Clark off injured 11 minutes into the second-half Blackpool dropped Keith Southern into the back four and he was beaten by Danny Butterfield who crossed to find Tommy Black unmarked in the area and his volley hit the back of the net. Worse was to come for Steve McMahon's side six minutes later when Black was pulled down in the area and stepped up to take the penalty himself.
