Thursday 26th December 1935

On Boxing Day in 1935 goals from Hampson and Doherty in front of 15,579 delivered a 2-0 win against Burnley at Bloomfield Road. Mr A Taylor the referee reported during the match that an orange and a walnut had been thrown at the Burnley goalkeeper. The FA Emergency Committee, perhaps resolving that it was at least festive fare, considered the referee’s report and took no further action.

Friday 26th December 1958

The Tangerines ruined Preston North End’s Christmas with a festive double in the space of 24 hours. The Seasiders inflicted a 4-2 Christmas Day defeat on Preston North End at Bloomfield Road with goals from J Kelly and a Bill Perry hat-trick. When the two sides met again on Boxing Day at Deepdale another goal from Kelly and a brace from Ray Charnley secured a 3-0 win with a combined total of 60,000 fans watching the games.

Tuesday 26th December 1972

The Clarets were sitting pretty at the top of the table with Pool lying next to them in second place. The holiday attendance figure broke the 25,000 barrier and those present at Bloomfield Road witnessed a narrow 2-1 victory for the visitors. Centre forward Billy Rafferty scored for the Seasiders whilst Kevin Tully achieved the rather dubious distinction of being sent off on his League debut.

David Lee

0224023aDavid Lee played 82 minutes of the home game against Stoke City on Boxing Day 1999 and, in a 2-1 defeat, he "showed flashes [of good form]" and put in some good crosses. However he was released after the game and returned to Wigan Athletic. Stand-in manager Mike Davies [Nigel Worthington had resigned two days before Christmas] commented, "Unfortunately due to circumstances David Lee is going back to Wigan. We don't want him to go back because we are short of bodies and he has done well for the team. But we are desperate for a striker and needs must. He has been different class. He is a great lad. If I could I would love to keep him. He is a genuine lad who has given everything. We know he is not the tough tackler everyone wanted him to be. But he has given us a breath of fresh air to start with. Perhaps he has got sucked into the twilight zone with us a little bit on his play sometimes. He is only human. But on the whole he has been very, very good. It's just that circumstances dictate he has got to go back."

Immediately he was released Blackpool signed a striker, Rob Matthews, on loan from Stockport County.
