wycombeBlackpool started brightly with a brilliant volley by Richard Wellens, whose right-footed effort from the left side of penalty area flew inches over the bar.

After just 3 minutes a Paul Simpson cross was drilled right-footed into the bottom-left hand side of the goal by Brett Ormerod to put the Seasiders in front. Jermaine McSporran of Wycombe was booked for unsporting behaviour shortly after on 5 minutes. A series of inswinging corners by Paul Simpson caused Wycombe all kinds of problems until Phil Thompson managed to make the pressure pay heading yet another Simpson corner spectcularly into the top left of the goal from 6 yards out on 13 minutes.

John O'Kane was booked for unsporting behaviour on 15 minutes and big John Murphy put a weak header past the right hand side upright after 18 minutes. Wycombe were forced into a tactical substitution with Jermaine McSporran being replaced by Danny Senda. They they began to hit back with two good left-footed shots by Steve Brown, the first of which went wide of the right hand post, and another right-footed effort resulted in a fantastic save by Phil Barnes. Brett Ormerod conjured up another right-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area which was cleared by keeper Martin Taylor, who was booked a minute later for unsporting behaviour. Blackpool were forced into a first half substitution, losing Ian Hughes, the skipper being replaced by John Hills.

Substitute John Hills committed a foul on Michael Simpson inside the box, and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which was taken left-footed by Steve Brown and well placed and into the bottom left hand side of the goal on 41 minutes. With over 5 minutes ofstoppage time being played, John Murphy went very close to extending Pool's lead - a fine cross by Neil MacKenzie was met with a brilliant right-footed volley by John Murphy from left side of penalty area, but missed the left hand side of the Wycombe goal.

Blackpool won a couple of free-kicks with fouls on Phil barnes and Brett Ormerod early in the second-half. Paul Simpson attempted a short corner for Pool and a couple of minutes later Brett Ormerod's right-footed effort from the right side of penalty area flew just over the Wycombe bar. Richie Wellens attempted to lob right-footed from the right hand side of the pitch, which brought off a fine catch by Wycombe keeper Martin Taylor. A Foul by Paul McCarthy on John Murphy saw the resultant free kick crossed left-footed by Paul Simpson from the right side, but cleared by Dannie Bulman. Crosses by John Hills ended in another fine save by Martin Taylor and Wycombe's Keith Ryan being cleared by Blackpool's Phil Thompson respectively.

Wycombe's goalscorer Steve Brown was replaced by Paul Emblen and Phil Thompson came under increasing pressure having cleared two inswinging corners from Wycombe's Keith Ryan and Darren Currie. An outswinging corner from the right by-line taken right-footed by Darren Currie was caught skilfully by Phil Barnes. Another brilliant right-footed shot by Brett Ormerod from the middle of the penalty area produced a fantastic parried save from Martin Taylor. Paul Simpson was replaced by Jamie Milligan after 71 minutes. Darren Currie, the hat-trick hero from Barnet's 7-0 mauling of the Seasiders last season, equalised with a superb headed goal for Wycombe on 82 minutes following a cross by Keith Ryan, finding the top-left of the goal from 6 yards out. Keith Ryan was replaced by Leon Phelan who then fired two dangerous inswinging corner from left by-line which were cleared frantically by Pool. Crosses by John Hills and a corner from left by-line taken short right-footed by Richie Wellens also brought fine saves from Martin Taylor before the referee finally blew for the end of the game.
